Finding a group of people who believe in the same thing as you do within school can be hard. In B203, every other Friday of the month, students have the opportunity to worship God and talk about how it relates to the sport they play. With Mrs. Farmer as the adviser, the club brings people in all sports together to communicate together using God.
“We just dive into the word of God on Friday mornings and we usually connect it somehow to being an athlete with glorifying God in your sport and just be[ing a] better person,” sophomore Kaylyn Habers said.
Bringing your sport into the word of God can help you stay motivated or persistent through your season and or year.
“FCA [Fellowship of Christian Athletes] has been around for a while but really hasn’t gone anywhere. Mrs. Farmer started it a while ago, and we’re just trying to get more people involved,” Habers said.
Christians at West have a harder time communicating with each other and don’t have a lot of opportunities because it is a public school. Starting a club focusing on christianity can help bring kids together and spread the word out more.
“We have West Side students every Wednesday. It’s like a next-gen church group that is 6th to 12th grade [students], and then there’s also fields for faith and prayer by poll,” junior Keira Murphy said.
Every Wednesday, students go to the building Elev8 for youth group. Fields for faith is where once a year, people can go to Thirlby Field and they have a guest speaker. Everyone then says a prayer.
“I think it was just kids from West Side Community Church that wanted to involve religion with school, and they decided to try to get more kids involved with religion,” junior Dylan Dunklow said.
For people in the FCA, sharing the gospel and figuring out how to include God into athletics and education are crucial.
“Spreading the gospel is important to some people to try to get other people connected,” Dunklow said.
