On Sept. 13, conservative commentator Matt Walsh released his latest movie titled “Am I Racist?” Walsh came out with another similarly styled documentary called “What is a Woman?” in 2022, where he interviewed people asking the said question. Fans loved the documentary and were very excited to discover that Walsh was coming out with a new film. This time, however, Walsh took a more comedic approach where he dressed in disguise and took Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) classes as well as interviewing DEI experts to discover if he is truly racist or not. Throughout the film, Walsh exposes the insane amounts of money that he was charged with to attend these classes, with the greatest amount totaling $50,000.
Walsh did a great job at acting as someone who was unsure about his thoughts on DEI. Since I have watched his content before, I already knew his views so it was interesting to watch him take on the persona of someone with the opposite position. Through his disguise, Walsh had the opportunity to get raw answers from the experts. He was told that all white people are racist and it can’t be fixed. But they also said that the solution to becoming “less racist” was to treat black people differently to keep them from being offended. For example, Walsh was told that white people have to be careful that they aren’t over or under-smiling when they encounter someone from a different race as it could offend them. It was interesting to see the DEI rhetoric voiced by people who consider themselves experts on the topic instead of just listening to conservatives comment on the phenomenon. It provided a fresh view and revealed the true thoughts of the “anti-racist” community. The best part of the film was how Walsh implemented a comedic aspect. I was laughing from the very first scene all the way to the end credits. Walsh cracked jokes and asked questions that the experts struggled to answer.
Another great aspect of the film was the new music that Christian rap artist Bryson Gray came out with for the film. The songs included “Am I Racist?” and “Do the Work”. Both selections added a lot to the film and it was nice to see Gray collaborating with other conservative celebrities.
Overall, “Am I Racist?” was a great film, it was successful at evenly balancing the comedic aspect and the informational aspect. Walsh was able to help people stay informed in a hilarious new way.
