Traverse City’s Big Lots, located in the Cherryland Center, began its going-out-of-business sales last December and is preparing to close all of its locations throughout the country. According to USA Today, more than 400 locations have already been closed in late 2024, with the remaining stores holding major sales in an attempt to sell off the last of their products.
Big Lots is known throughout Traverse City as being the go-to place for great deals on things like furniture, mattresses, home decor, electronics and other interesting items. Since its addition to the Cherryland Mall in June of 2011, it has earned this reputation as well as great reviews from hundreds of customers. According to CBS News, due to financial difficulties caused by high inflation and interest rates, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September. Big Lots then attempted to sell what remained to the private equity firm Nexus Capital Management, and as part of the sales agreement, began the closing of over 300 stores across the country. Because this agreement fell through in December, the company is currently planning on full closure of its 963 stores if it doesn’t find a new buyer.
The week before Christmas was a busy time for Traverse City’s Big Lots, according to Michigan News Source. As a hurried frenzy of shoppers flocked to stores throughout the city to buy food, gifts and decorations, Big Lots had recently kicked off its nationwide sales, so hundreds of shoppers took the opportunity to get in on the deals.
Big Lots is currently facing an uncertain future that affects both its employees and loyal customers. If the company cannot find a new buyer, hundreds of stores throughout the country will be shut down. As the company faces this possible permanent closure, sales will continue to be held in its locations, giving buyers one last chance to snag a good deal.
