With countless teasers and easter eggs hidden inside Tate McRae’s recent music videos and performances, McRae finally released her third studio album “So Close To What” on Feb. 21, 2025, via RCA Records. McRae has already released three singles that are featured in the tracklist for “So Close To What,” which include: “It’s ok i’m ok” released on Sep. 12, 2024, “2 hands” released on Nov. 14, 2024, and “Sports car” released on Jan. 24, 2025. In addition to releasing her new album, McRae is also set to start her fifth tour and first ever arena tour. The “Miss Possessive Tour” is starting on Mar. 18, 2025 in Mexico City, Mexico and concludes all the way in November in Inglewood, California, making it a world tour. Her opening acts include artists Bennee and Zara Larsson who will open for her throughout the entire tour.
McRae worked with a few producers on the album that include Grant Boutin, Ilya, Lostboy and Ryan Tedder, who have worked with McRae on her previous albums. Tedder has worked with lots of famous artists like Adele, One Republic, Camila Cabello, Taylor Swift, B.o.B, Jonas Brothers, Beyonce and many more.
“So Close To What” is very different from “Think Later,” from 2023. “So Close To What” songs have more of a genuine feeling and have a majority of her upbeat songs, even collaborating with Kid LAROI in “I Know love.” LAROI and McRae have been in a relationship for a little bit over a year, which I think motivates most of McRae’s “So Close To What” songs, like she’s talking about him. In the beginning of “I know love,” McRae sings about meeting LAROI for the first time and the conversation they had together.
I really enjoyed listening to this album for the first time, it gave me chills in every single song she brings. Last week, McRae posted herself next to her own Hollywood star of her tracklist for “So Close To What” which made me so happy and excited for her upcoming album release. Her pop star presence is what I think we need in the music industry. Like a new generation Brittney Spears. Her new “Revolving door” music video she really shows off herself as a dancer. The choreography by Robbie Blue showcasing her emotions as the song talks about coming back to the same person just as a revolving door. The video even shows McRae crying at the end expressing her emotions. McRae talked about her “alter ego” as she wrote this album while she was on her “Think Later tour” saying that her “alter ego” is way different than her introverted self, like she’s a new person. I am really proud of McRae and her accomplishments from this past year. I feel as if she grew as a person a lot through this album. Throughout the 42 minutes, the 15 track album (with one bonus track) is almost impossible to rank, but here are my rankings of the songs from favorite to least favorite.
