After having to do a smaller production last year for their spring musical, West Senior High’s theater department wanted to deliver something special this year, and with their adaption of the Broadway hit “Mamma Mia!” they did just that.

The production is truly something special. The energy and dedication the cast bring to every lyric, dance move, and line create an electric atmosphere. When the curtains lifted, the first thing I noticed was the set. Thanks to the stage crew, and their talented design skills, I was instantly transported from cold, snowy Northern Michigan, to a sunny Greek island. The aesthetics of the stagecraft, coupled with the musical talents of the pit were awe-inspiring. From that point on, I was blown away. Everything from the smoke machines to the moving boat, to the fabulous wardrobes, was amazing but the highlight of the night had to be the depth of talent that is ever-present on stage.

Their singing was impeccable, their chemistry and humor were off the charts and the energy they performed with was contagious. If I had to pick some of my favorite scenes (which is almost impossible) I would have to go with “Take A Chance On Me,” “Money, Money, Money,” and “Dancing Queen.” Just when I thought the experience could not get any better, I was presented with the ending sequence. I won’t give too much away, but make sure you are wearing some shoes you can dance in!

The musical was easily the highlight of my week and my only complaint would be that I was unable to get tickets for the green cast since they were sold out (reliable sources have informed me though, that they are just as fabulous as the gold!). Overall, this musical was just what I needed after these past two years. If you were able to score some tickets for the last shows this weekend, you will not be disappointed. I guarantee that “Mamma Mia!” will be the highlight of your night.
