This summer, of 2026, West plans to update the school’s campus with new construction in the parking lot on the east side of the school. The construction will start right after the seniors’ last day, which is May 22. The plan for the construction is to redo the north and east side of the school’s road and fix those parts. Last year, West made an upgrade in a $4.5 million project to rebuild the west side parking lot and bus driveway. This project is meant to be continued on the east side of the campus this summer. Principal Brain Guiney, plans on patrolling the construction to make sure everything is okay so students and parents can have safe transportation on the school roads once the new school year starts.
“Summer driving will be impacted. Students will have access to only the west side parking lots. The north and east side of the school’s road and parking lots will be torn up and redone.[The road construction will begin after seniors are finished. Their last day is May 22.] The project will take much of the summer,” Guiney said.
Many students and teachers who walk to school may be impacted by the new construction that is taking place, rerouting their daily walk or bike ride to school. The goal is to focus on infrastructure and traffic flow for this update. Students like freshman Everett Wynn walk everyday from his house to West. Wynn wakes up at 7 am every school morning and gets to the school around 8 am ready to go.
“There is not really a ton of traffic when I leave. My pathway to the school will change once construction starts, it will be a bit longer going around the construction. I go on just mainly all the roads in the neighborhood and a path that cuts through to get to the school. It takes me around five minutes. It’s quick to walk and I don’t want to bother anybody to waste their time,” Wynn said.
Owen Linguar, a sophomore here at West, bikes to school every chance that he can during the school year. He expresses that his route has taken a sudden shift in how he gets to school on time due to the construction and traffic issues that take place in the mornings and after school.
“It has, especially construction around the high school, changed a lot from the beginning of last year to the end of last year because when they were doing work around the new path and traffic route, I just started going another way around it,” Linguar said.
