In the light of the recent shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis it is important to note that every death is a tragedy. As sorrowful it is that these two individuals were killed, it is no excuse for abolishing I.C.E, whose job is to keep our country safe by deporting illegal immigrants.
It’s baffling that people suddenly are against deportations. Democrats seemed to love deportations during the Obama administration. Under this administration, over 5 million illegal immigrants were deported according to the Migration Policy Institute. Obama even awarded Tom Homan (the same man who is in charge of deportations today) the Presidential Rank Award for the amount of deportations he completed. But since Trump wants to do it, it’s bad? Let me remind you that the people that I.C.E is going in and rounding up are here illegally. Other than the fact that they failed to enter our country in the correct way, there are many illegal immigrants committing violent crimes. In Minneapolis alone ICE has deported “14 charged with homicide and 139 with assault, as well as 87 sex offenders and 28 gang members” according to BBC News. I.C.E isn’t the problem. The problem is how people are reacting and responding to their deportations. There are groups of people in Minneapolis actively trying to prevent ICE from making these arrests. They are trained to find I.C.E agents and get in the way of them doing their jobs. They blow whistles, bang on drums, and yell. Alex Pretti was caught on camera a little over a week before his death, spitting at officers and attacking a I.C.E vehicle. This is no way to treat federal officers. By all means, if you don’t agree with their missions or tactics, protest. But do so peacefully and respectfully as many students did here a few weeks ago. Both of these individuals who got shot along with many other protesters were interfering with I.C.E’s operations. They weren’t peacefully holding signs and recording. They put themselves in harm’s way to try and prevent these I.C.E agents from arresting criminals.
On Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s official Youtube channel he claimed that “Donald Trump wants this chaos.” If that’s the case, President Trump must be very upset that in 2025 violent crime has dropped 21% since 2024 according to Stateline News. Coincidence? I think not. While President Trump is making it a point to round up violent criminals, the left is sending a strong message that they are fully against anything that he tries to do. They don’t appear to care about death until it benefits their agenda. They didn’t seem to care when Laken Riley was killed by an illegal immigrant while on a morning jog. They objected to the act written in her honor to prevent illegal immigrants who have committed crimes from being released. However, President Trump, the Republicans, and myself care about Renee Good and Alex Pretti. We wish that they had never been told that it was worth it to get in I.C.E’s way and aggressively try to stop them from doing their job.
